Ingredients
  

Burger Patties
  • 2 cans black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup bread crumbs or panko
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for cooking
Toppings
  • 4 slices cheese optional
  • 4 buns burger buns whole grain or regular
  • 1 cup lettuce shredded
  • 1 medium tomato sliced
  • 1/2 cup avocado sliced or mashed
  • 1/4 cup salsa optional

Method
 

Prepare the Mixture
  1. In a mixing bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
  2. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Stir in the bread crumbs and beaten egg until fully combined.
Form and Cook the Patties
  1. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form into patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
Assemble the Burgers
  1. Place each patty on a bun and top with lettuce, tomato, avocado, and cheese if desired.
  2. Serve with salsa on the side if desired.
