Ingredients

Spiced Apple Filling
  • 6 medium apples (Honeycrisp and Granny Smith) peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup or brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg freshly grated
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch to thicken the natural juices
Golden Buttery Oat Streusel
  • 1 1/4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats certified gluten-free if needed
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour or oat flour / 1:1 gluten-free flour
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1/2 tsp flaky sea salt Maldon or kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp unsalted European butter melted and slightly cooled (or coconut oil)
Salted Caramel Finishing & Serving
  • 1/3 cup warm salted caramel sauce homemade or premium store-bought
  • 4 scoops vanilla bean ice cream for serving à la mode
  • 1/4 tsp extra flaky sea salt for finishing garnish

Method

Prep the Oven & Baking Dish
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch or 9-inch square baking dish (or a 10-inch cast iron skillet) lightly with butter.
Toss the Spiced Apple Layer
  1. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples with lemon juice, pure maple syrup, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and cornstarch until each slice is thoroughly coated in fragrant spices.
  2. Transfer the spiced apples to the prepared baking dish, pressing them down gently into an even, compact layer.
Mix the Golden Oat Streusel
  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, flour, packed dark brown sugar, flaky sea salt, and ground cinnamon.
  2. Pour the melted butter over the dry mixture. Stir with a fork until moist, clumpy streusel clusters form.
  3. Evenly scatter the oat streusel over the spiced apple layer, completely covering the apples from edge to edge.
Bake to Golden Perfection & Serve
  1. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes, until the oat streusel is deep golden-brown and fragrant, and the apple juices are bubbling vigorously around the edges.
  2. Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes so the caramel juices slightly settle. Drizzle generously with warm salted caramel sauce.
  3. Spoon generous warm portions into dessert bowls, top immediately with a scoop of cold vanilla bean ice cream, and finish with a pinch of flaky sea salt. Enjoy immediately!
